Evan’s 2024 Hobby Recap

Well I was going to start this article by looking back at my 2024 hobby goals and comparing it to what I actually did and well…… instead of focusing on what I didn’t do (almost all of them) let’s focus on what I did.

Adepticon 2024

The first quarter of the hobby year was dominated by prep for Adepticon. We ran events there for the first time last year and had our hands full getting ready. For Adepticon I painted 60 tiny airplanes to cover bases for events we ran or ones I played in. I also prepped a bunch of Chain of Command game aids for use in our events.

Adepticon itself was a ton of fun, and I’m excited to head back again in a few months.

Springtime Lull

April and May were pretty much standstill months for my hobby progress. I took a new position at work and it required about 6 weeks of training away from home with minimal time for hobby pursuits.

Slow Summer

Hobby wise June, July and August were slow. I worked on things but not consistently enough to really push any project ahead. I got the start of my Winter US project in 28mm, which I wrote about here. Otherwise there wasn’t much to report. Maybe that’s because there was a new baby in the house? Probably so.

Fall Revival

As my real life started to normalize again in September, October and November, so did my hobby. My Winter US project really picked up steam, bolstered by the new warlord kit and a paint scheme I’ve enjoyed doing. I also got back on the tiny airplanes, finishing some items for Bag the Hun and painting up some jets for Missile Threat. Those jets will make an appearance at Adepticon next year for a joint Missile Threat event with the guys from Lead Pursuit Podcast.

December is for…tearing apart your hobby space?

Continuing my Winter Americans, I had a soft goal of getting them done by the 80th anniversary of the battle of the bulge…. I didn’t even come close. They’re still underway but I’m about ready to finish off all the infantry models.

For a long time my former hobby room in the basement was under threat of being given up for a renovation into a play room for the kids. The time to start moving on that was a few weeks ago. It took me a good week to get it all opened up and demoed, as well as moving my workspace to a different part of the basement. I’ve rebuilt my workspace better than it was, and it’s finally back an operational this week. So back to Winter Americans I go.

2024 Lessons

The biggest takeaway from 2024 for me was I don’t have nearly the amount of time to work on projects as I once did. Three young children make it disappear fast. That’s fine, it just means I need to adjust my expectations and take on less new projects. Good thing Ben and Anthony didn’t drag me down the 15mm 1980s Cold War gone hot rabbit hole or something. (You didn’t resist much -Ben)

My other takeaway is I want to play more games, even solo ones. My Bag the Hun campaign only received two installments this year and that’s bugging me a bit so expect some of that to come out as soon as I get my Adepticon prep done this year (the cycle repeats itself).

Hopefully everyone else had a good year, and thanks for sticking around our little blog. We’ve got some stuff in the works for the future that I think you’ll enjoy.

-Evan

  1. I like your approach, Evan, concentrating on what you achieved! 🙂 Good to read what you’ve got done and I really like the jets! Adjusting your hobby time to fit in sounds like good planning to me! Will be good to see what’s coming in the future!
