Fighter Jet Fever!

It’s no secret I’m a massive plane nerd. You’ve seen plenty of it here for sure. It was kind of inevitable that eventually I’d ease my way out of the Second World War and into the Jet Age… except I didn’t ease myself in at all….. I hit the afterburners.

I picked up the rules for Missile Threat a while ago to be honest, yet they’ve just sat idle on the shelf since then. I did play a small game to familiarize myself a bit. I was having a hard time getting myself excited to work on it though. In steps Adepticon 2024 and Doug from The Lead Pursuit Podcast. The LPP guys hosted an event on that Thursday covering the new-ish “Wing Commander” supplement for Warlord Games’ Blood Red Skies. I jumped on a chance to push little jets around and after playing a few games, including a particularly interesting one with Doug, I was hooked. What can I say… I wanna go fast.

After getting home from Adepticon I started getting more excited for jets. It became a question of where to start. Then Steve at Blue Falcon Hobbies/LPP came out with an F-105 model and well it’s one of my favorites. Looks like I’d be heading to the skies over Vietnam.

I mean come on, how can you not love it?

Fast forward to July and after a lot of 3d printing I’ve really gone all out. For the USAF I’ve printed 8x each of F-100s, F-4s, and F-105s. In addition I printed four F-105Gs for Wild Weasel shenanigans. For the Vietnam People’s Air Force I printed up 8x MiG 17s and 21s, and 6x MiG 19s. I’ve also assembled some 1/300 S-75 / SA-2 Guideline sites and missiles, as well as a bunch of air to air missiles. After all Missile Threat wouldn’t be appropriate without plenty of missiles flying around the table.

Turns out Missile Threat won’t be the only game I’m playing as the recent LPP Episode 128 – BRS Jet Updates provided details on that project and you can get the aircraft cards for BRS jets here. I enjoyed playing Blood Red Skies jets so I’ll be excited to watch it develop.

Oh I guess I do have to paint them up too eh? Well I started on that and have some MiG-21s awaiting decals, while the rest of the jets are being prepped for primer very soon. I still need to get decals in 1/300 for all of that, but that will come in time.

MiG-21s ready for decals

In the end I’m just excited about this, I’ve grabbed some books covering air battles over Vietnam and that’s been fueling my fire. My hobby pace is never very fast, but this is a pretty aggressive ramp up of a project, even for me. Plus, beyond 1/300 Vietnam Blue Falcon released some nice Ogaden War decals this month so I guess I’ll be doing those up too…. oh well!

  1. All sounds good, Evan! ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m embarking on WW2 Blood Red Skies myself – you probably know about them, but Flight Deck Decals in the US make some very nice 3D printed planes, including jets! Even with postage from the US to the UK the price is good. The models I’ve bought are really good – I just need to paint them now!

    1. Awesome John! You may want to have a look at ROC Works as well. They sell a fair bit of the same “Plane Printer” catalog among others and they’re in the UK as well!

      1. Thanks for the info, Evan! ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve got some of the ROC models and they’re nice. Funnily enough, on balance if you order the right amount to minimise the postage cost, Flight Deck Decals can work out cheaper to the UK and they only usually take a week to arrive!
