Spotlight: Crusader Miniatures German 5cm Mortar Team

While the crew and I are at Adepticon I figured I put out a nice easy article for your entertainment. While you’re reading this our forces are most likely being routed on the tabletop. Schnapps will be required win or lose! – Ben

Like most early and mid-war World War II infantry platoons the Germans had an organic light mortar team for a little direct and indirect fire support. In their case it comes in the form of a 5cm mortar team. Chain of Command calls for a three man team while Bolt Action slims it down to two personnel.

While shopping for his Blitzkrieg German platoon Evan found the German 5cm Mortar team from Crusader Miniatures. As the pack contains a pair of two man teams he was nice enough to send me one in the mail.

I also had a 5cm mortar team from Warlord Games in my pile of shame. The casting on the Crusader sculpts required much less clean up so I chose to use them first. I am sure I will make use the Warlord team eventually as an additional 5cm mortar is available to some Chain of Command platoons. For the third man I used a prone body from the Warlord Games Blitzkrieg German plastic kit. I loved this as it utilizes a prone body I normally wouldn’t use. Waste not, want not? Like the Crusader riflemen the mortar team scaled together well with the Warlord plastic kit.

With the addition of the mortar men I can call my Chain of Command core Blitzkrieg/ Barbarossa platoon finished. While I don’t see myself using a light mortar in Bolt Action, as they always only hit on a 6, it is good to have options.
